A Topological Search for Beyond the Standard Model Light Bosons Decaying into Muon Pairs with the CMS Detector at the CERN LHC
Abstract
dc:description.abstractA topological search for new beyond the Standard Model light bosons decaying into muon pairs with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC is presented. The analysis uses the full dataset recorded by the CMS detector during the 2015, sqrt(s) = 13 TeV, proton-proton data taking campaign of 2.83 fb^−1 to search for new, possibly long-lived, light bosons with a mass between 0.25 - 8.5 GeV/c^2. No excess beyond the Standard Model expectation is observed in the data, and a model-independent upper limit is set on the product of the cross section of the production of new light bosons in proton-proton collisions, the branching fraction of a new light boson decaying to muon pairs, and the detector acceptance. The result is interpreted in the context of two illustrative benchmark scenarios: the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, and dark supersymmetry. A large, previously unconstrained, area of the parameter space is limited.
