Has COVID-19 impacted short-term performance of healthcare and technology IPOs?

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This research investigates if COVID-19 impacted short-term IPO performance of two sectors, healthcare and technology. The number of IPOs during the pandemic years is the highest in history, indicating a causal relationship between IPOs and the pandemic. The literature on COVID-19 and IPO performance is scarce, with our research being the first to implement the year 2021 for COVID-19. We use a dummy variable to split the sample into pre-COVID-19 and COVID-19, as well as measure the severity through reported cases and deaths. The findings show a negative relationship between the later stage of COVID-19 and short-term performance, while the early stage is predominantly not significant.
