Reducing scope 3 carbon emissions in grocery stores' supply chain systems

Carbon emissions that drive climate change are growing worldwide, and human activities have been responsible for nearly all of the emission increases over the past 150 years. Existing government initiatives are insufficient to solve the problem; therefore, companies and organizations must contribute to climate change mitigation measures. The master thesis was worked in collaboration with the Icelandic low-cost grocery store chain Krónan ehf. and the company was used as a case in the study. The aim of the thesis was to evaluate and calculate the scope 3 carbon emissions from transportation and distribution in Krónan’s supply chain, with the objective of answering the following research questions: "How much transportation and distribution emissions are included in Krónan’s supply chain system?" and "How can grocery stores reduce their scope 3, transportation and distribution emissions?". The Greenhouse Gas Protocol was used to identify and measure Krónan’s scope 3, carbon emissions from transportation and distribution. The thesis results revealed that carbon emissions from transportation and distribution accounted for approximately 80% of Krónan’s total accounted emissions in 2021, and many opportunities were identified for carbon emission reduction improvement in grocery stores’ supply chain systems.
