Pornography : gender differences in pornography usage, category, motivational basis, and frequency

This study aimed to examine differences in utilization of pornography amongst genders. Motivational bases for pornographic use, difference in frequency and category of pornography were examined. The participants in the study were university students, adults over the age of 18. Data collection took place online and participants anonymously answered a questionnaire that they accessed online. The participants were 58 total, 72.4% (N=42) of them were women, 27.6% (N=16) men and 0% (N=0) of other specified gender. Descriptive statistics and independent samples t-test were used for statistical analysis in SPSS statistical analysis computer program. The results of the study showed that there was a significant difference amongst men and women when it comes to frequency of pornography use and motivational bases for pornography use. Men viewed pornography more frequently than women and scored higher on 7 out of 8 motivational bases. The top three porn categories viewed by both genders were “Vaginal sex” (M=2.74, SD=1.44), “Oral sex” (M=2.05, SD=1.18) and “Amateur” (M=1.98, SD=1.15). Significant difference was found amongst genders on 8 pornography categories. Men scored higher than women on viewing the three most utilized category and most of the categories listed.
