Development of a dynamic multi-belt scale for IQF sorting

Today's modern fishing industry creates a need to optimize production flow and product yield while reducing human labor. Valka, an Icelandic tech company, was in need of a new dynamic scale to offer more rapid weighing for sorting frozen fish pieces. The design proposed herein features a smaller weighing platform than previously employed, meant for sorting frozen fish pieces at a rate of 150 per minute with modular capabilities. Axiomatic Design principles were applied in the development of the new design to systematically evaluate the design characteristic. All components were reviewed and the new design features smaller dimensions, a lower pitch conveyor belt and a different load cell with optimal capacity. Four configurations were tested; two spacing support piece materials and two types of load cell. Previous dynamic weighing products by Valka are capable of delivering a 95% confidence interval of +/-4g at a rate of 80 fresh fish pieces per minute. Therefore, the goal was to maintain this accuracy while measuring 150 frozen fish pieces per minute. The results presented suggest that the optimal configuration is that with the Flintec PC6 load cell and a steel spacing support piece. The confidence interval of these measurements was found to be +/- 3,98 g, so the ideal was achieved.
