The bag’s journey in its entirety through Keflavik Airport : analyzed with simulation
Abstract
dc:description.abstractBaggage handling systems (BHS) are a crucial infrastructure to ensure smooth baggage handling operations at major airports. Insufficient capacity of a BHS makes it more challenging to secure accurate and punctual delivery of bags. With the increasing number of passengers travelling through Keflavik airport, the airport is faced with capacity issues. When studying the bag’s journey in its entirety – all various activities by different actors throughout the airport – it can be observed that all these activities interact with each other and impact the BHS’ capacity. Hence, it is important, when reviewing control logics and operations involved in the process, to look at the entire process to avoid congestion in the BHS. A detailed simulation model, which reflects the baggage handling process at Keflavik airport, has been developed. The objective of the simulation is to enable the assessment of various operations, and their interactions, involved in the process. Outputs from the model are intented to be used to optimize the current state of process and for planning at a strategic level. Results from historical data validation suggest that the model can successfully be used to promote solutions for the entire process.
