Prioritizing and overseeing a portfolio of generic drug launches

Generic pharmaceutical sales companies like Medis usually have a large portfolio of drugs that are being launched every year in a variety of markets and for a lot of different customers. This results in a quite substantial number of deadlines that need to be completed. When a company lacks general oversight on which deadlines have been met and which are remaining, some problems might occur. Problems that could have been easily prevented by better tracking the process of each launch. Another issue that must be considered when dealing with a large portfolio of any kind, is that often resources are wasted on products that can be considered as low value. Therefore, it is often advisable to prioritize which products/drugs are more valuable than others. Shifting resources to focus more on the valuable products in the portfolio can result in a better total yield in the end of the year, even though that means sometimes having to sacrifice lower value items. To tackle these problems literature review on the subject was conducted and the requirements of Medis were identified through personal communication with both supervisors and project managers within the company, along with input from some employees. The result of this project was a dynamic Excel user interface. This user interface can receive data and set up a checklist for the project managers and employees of Medis to make it simple to keep oversight of what deadline has been met for each launch. The workbook is also capable of prioritizing which drug launch should have high focus, using a scaling method to calculate both monetary and strategic value and optimization to prioritize based on those values.
