Type 3 porous liquids: compressibility and gas and liquid separations

dc:description.abstractThis thesis investigates the compressibility of Type 3 porous liquids and gas and liquid separation by Type 3 porous liquids. Current studies suggest that Type 3 porous liquids might have great potential to be applied as gas adsorbents in industry. Although in literature, the uptake of gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen etc. into porous liquids have been described, there were no reports on the potential of porous liquids to separate ethane and ethene. A range of porous solids selected according to their ability to adsorb ethane and ethene would be synthesized and characterized. Subsequently, formulated porous liquids were fully characterized and evaluated for their potential in ethane/ethene separation by pure gas solubility measurements. Furthermore, no porous liquids have previously been explored to perform liquid-liquid separations. Hydrophobic Type 3 porous liquids were developed for liquid-liquid separation specifically mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) from water. The MEG adsorption ability of Type 3 porous liquids was also compared to the common liquid separation technique (solvent extraction). In the end, the compressibility of Type 3 porous liquid based on hydrophobic porous solids were discussed in this thesis. The compressible liquid showed much higher compressibility than seen in conventional liquids. Neutron scattering analysis was also applied to monitor the system to study any structural changes of porous solids during the compression/decompression process.<br/>
