Improving surgical documentation in paediatric oncology evaluating the outcomes of synoptic operative reports on documentation completeness in childhood cancer surgery

This research explores the role of synoptic operative reports (SR) in improving the structure and quality of surgical documentation in pediatric oncology, with a focus on childhood cancer surgeries. The thesis addresses the challenges posed by traditional narrative operative reports (NR), which often exhibit variability, incompleteness, and lack of standardization, contributing to potential miscommunication within multidisciplinary healthcare teams. The research examines how SR, with their standardized and structured format, can enhance the completeness, clarity, and communication of critical intraoperative findings in pediatric solid tumor resections. By developing evidence-based guidelines for surgical documentation in pediatric oncology, this work aims to identify universal critical intraoperative findings that should be documented, provide practical recommendations for improving documentation quality, identify the gaps in traditional narrative reporting, and compare synoptic operative reporting to traditional narrative reports. The research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on synoptic reporting and its application in pediatric oncology, offering valuable insights for both clinical practice and future research.
