The potential of Integrating Information and Communication Technology in Enhancing School Inspection in Tanzania

This study aimed to investigate the "Potential of Integrating Information and Communication Technology in Enhancing School Inspection in Tanzania". The study used the survey research design to collect both qualitative and quantitative data altogether to address the research sub-questions of the study. A sample of 56 respondents comprising 53 School Inspectors and three Chief Inspectors of Schools from Dar es Salaan zone office and Three Municipal offices (Ilala, Kinondoni and Temeke) participated in the study. Data was collected by using structured questionnaires, interviews, and observations schedule. Qualitative data was analyzed using Data Reduction Technique and quantitative data was analysed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study has revealed that there is great potential for integrating ICT to enhance school inspection in Tanzania. This is due to the fact that majority of inspectors have basic ICT knowledge, reasonable access to important ICTs facilities even though this is by sharing existing facilities with colleagues in the office. More than half of the inspectors already use ICTs in their daily activities. However the findings of the study have shown that despite the potential of integrating ICT to enhance school inspection, there are a number of challenges that need to be addressed. The challenges include lack of knowledge specifically in the areas of MS Excel, power point presentation, email attachments, lack of regular training to keep school inspectors abreast of ICT integration in school inspection, and limited access to ICT by most school inspectors. Based on the findings, the study recommends regular development programme for school inspectors on ICT, adequate provision of ICT facilities and encouragement of school inspectors to apply ICT in their daily work.
