Comparison of DNA adducts in mouse bladder and lung tissue from smoke-exposed and control mice
Abstract
dc:descriptionSmoking cigarettes is a common exposure pathway that has been linked with various types of cancer, including cancers of the lung and bladder. Carcinogens in the cigarette smoke may lead to the formation of DNA adducts within body tissues. DNA adducts arise from the covalent bond formed between a carcinogenic chemical and DNA. An increase in the number of DNA adducts present in a tissue could indicate the initiation of the carcinogenesis process. The measurement of the number and type of DNA adducts present in a tissue can be used to monitor exposure to a carcinogenic chemical and the dose received. Lungs receive direct exposure to cigarette smoke chemicals and carcinogens, while bladder tissue receives an indirect exposure. The transport of the chemicals and carcinogens throughout the body may decrease the exposure that the bladder receives in comparison with that of the lung. Comparison of the relative adduct levels in both mouse bladder and lung tissue from cigarette smoke-exposed and control mice will provide an indication of the correlation between the levels in each tissue.
