Individual Differences Contribute to Emotion Regulation via Visual Attention Deployment

This study examined the role of individual differences in the use of attentional deployment in emotion regulation following negative feedback. Fluid intelligence, working memory capacity, trait anxiety, self-esteem, and behavioral activation system/Behavioral activation system sensitivity were found to have differential patterns predicting reactivity to negative feedback, gaze behavior toward valenced – self- referential word pairs, and self-esteem following the word viewing task. Gaze behavior was found to interact with fluid intelligence and to interact with post-feedback self- esteem in predicting self-esteem after word viewing. Possible mechanisms underlying these relationships are discussed and future research, in the light of the current findings, are proposed.
