Characteristics and usefulness of interfascicular contacts in peripheral nerve recording

Abstract

dc:description

Neural interfaces have been used in conjunction with source separationalgorithms to address the challenge of extracting useful command signals fromnerves. A peripheral nerve interface is generally useful for signal extraction if it (1) exhibits favorable recording characteristics such as signal-to-noise ratio and (2) provides as many independent channels of neural information as possible. We investigated the usefulness of novel interfascicular electrodes in acute experiments on the rabbit sciatic nerve (n = 4). Directed interfascicular contacts were found to record compound action potentials (CAPs) with a meanSNR (at p = 0.05) of 24.5 dB with respect to interference sources. Contacts that (1)faced opposite directions and (2) were placed in various positions within theepineurium were found to record independent information from the nerve (mixing matrix |det(H)|>0.05 for all electrode configurations). This neuralinformation recorded using interfascicular electrodes may potentially be useful forcommand signal extraction algorithms.
