SAFETY, EFFICACY, AND IMMUNOGENICITY OF SARS-COV-2 MRNA VACCINES IN PATIENTS WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS

mRNA vaccines mark a significant advancement in immunization, extending potential applications beyond COVID-19. Although mRNA vaccines are effective in healthy individuals, their safety and efficacy in autoimmune conditions like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a type 1-interferon-driven disease, remain uncertain, as their mechanism of inducing T-cell-mediated responses and antibody production may risk exacerbating underlying immune dysregulation. This study evaluated immune responses to mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in SLE patients and healthy controls through clinical assessments, serological testing, antibody quantification, and flow cytometric analysis of immune cell subsets. The vaccines were well-tolerated in SLE patients, with no disease flares reported. While antibody responses were reduced, particularly among those receiving mycophenolate mofetil, notable B and T cell alterations reflected preserved adaptive immunity. These findings support the safety of mRNA vaccines in SLE and highlight the importance of tailored monitoring in immunosuppressed populations.
