An analysis of spending patterns associated with the PHALANX Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) Program
Abstract
dc:description.abstractIn light of the current world climate, U.S. military force protection has become an increasing concern. The bombing of the USS COLE and terrorist actions on the World Trade Center buildings show a vulnerability to attack both at home and abroad. In response to this threat, the Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) has become an attractive system for re-evaluation as a deterrent to hostile airborne threats to U.S. Navy surface ships. Because it is a mature system, data exist related to past spending patterns and the resultant outputs of that spending. This project analyzes those spending patterns and identifies potential areas of investigation for cost savings.
