Expanding AP Enrollment for Hispanic and African American Students: Change Leadership Plan

<p>American education has historically failed to provide Hispanic and African American students with equal opportunities, evidenced by the long-standing underachievement of these students when compared to White counterparts. To provide all students with access to rigorous educational programs, many school districts have focused on expanding Advanced Placement (AP) programs; however, the achievement gaps experienced by these minority students limit their participation. This study examined a district’s efforts to expand the AP participation of these students that includes identification and recruitment and suggested that this expansion requires leadership to engage in a transformation of school culture that promotes racial consciousness and is guided by a clear vision. This research highlighted how technical approaches to addressing enrollment and achievement gaps experienced by race can fail despite the best intentions of school leaders.</p>
