The Nuclear Renaissance and Its Implications for Nonproliferation Security

The growing concern over carbon emissions and global warming has created a renewed interest in nuclear power. The struggle to ensure the peaceful use of nuclear technology may reach new heights as developing states seek assistance from the International Atomic Energy Agency. I argue that the current nonproliferation regime is not prepared to adequately prevent illicit proliferation and any increase in the number of nuclear programs will exacerbate the existing nonproliferation shortcomings. In light of the current proliferation struggles with North Korea and Iran, the international community should make every effort to strengthen the nonproliferation regime.
