Evaluation of Diagnosis Related Groups: Impacts on Cost and Patient Care

The impacts of the Prospective Payment Systems (PPS) reimbursement methodology of utilizing diagnosis related groups (DRGs) for calculating hospital charges was evaluated on Medicare program costs and quality of patient care. Through a comprehensive literature review, three measurements in the quality of patient care, and statistical analysis, it was concluded that DRGs have resulted in shifted medical services and reduced hospital length of stay for Medicare patients. It was uncertain if this shift actually reduced Medicare hospital expenditures as many studies have claimed. However, it was concluded that DRGs did not detrimentally affect the outcome of patient care.
