Goal Orientation and Responses to Negative Feedback

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The effect of goal orientation (GO) on responses to and attitudes toward negative feedback were examined. Seventy college students from a Midwest university were provided negative normative feedback regarding their performance on a Boggle® word finding task. Half of the participants received normative feedback only, while half received both normative and developmental feedback. Developmental feedback significantly improved performance, use of strategies and use of a wider variety of strategies. Learning GO (LGO) was positively related to task performance, satisfaction with strategies, and number of strategies used following both normative and developmental feedback. Performance GO (PGO) was negatively related to performance following feedback. Self-efficacy was also examined and was positively related to LGO following feedback and negatively related to PGO.
