Variation of the Administration of the WISC-III Block Design Subtest

The present study investigated the effect of Side and Center positioning of stimulus materials on the Block Design subtest of the WISC-III. Third graders (16 males; 13 females) and sixth graders (11 males; 19 females) were randomly assigned to conditions, side and center. In the Center condition, the subtest stimulus materials were aligned with the participant's midline. In the Side condition, the stimulus materials were placed 1.5 inches (3.81cm) off of midline. The results of an ANCOVA with prior experience with the subtest scaled scores. However, results of a repeated-measures ANCOVA with experience as covariate indicated that stimulus positioning affected raw scores on items 4, 11, and 12. It is recommended that a standard distance from midline or placement on midline of stimulus materials be specified for consistent test administrations.
