The Effect of a Teaching Intervention on Cardiac Risk Factor Knowledge Among Elementary School Children

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The effect of using the American Heart Association's Heartpower kit to increase the knowledge level of fifth grade elementary students on heart disease was investigated. A quasi-experimental, pre-test, post-test study was conducted with two groups of students. Administration of five one-hour teaching interventions were done on general heart health, nutrition, exercise, and smoking to the experimental group. Whereas the control and experimental groups did not differ significantly on the pre-test, there was statistically significant improvement between the two groups on the post-test. The experimental group, however, did not have a significant improvement when comparing their pre-test and post-test scores. Analysis of the subscales for the experimental group revealed a statistically significant increase in knowledge of smoking. Overall, the findings demonstrated small but not statistically significant improvements in knowledge retention one week after the teaching intervention.
