Mule Deer Habitat Modeling With the Use of Existing Government Data

The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) can be used as a helpful tool for wildlife biologists. GIS can be used to analyze wildlife habitat. The purpose of this research was to use existing government data: Gap Analysis Project (GAP) data, Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data and Digital Line Graph (DLG) data in a GIS mule deer habitat model. The study area was the Oglala National Grasslands and surrounding area of Northwest Nebraska. A GIS model of the study area was constructed and tested. The model was then tested for accuracy using ground truth points. The model as compared to the landscape proved to be 74% accurate.
