A Descriptive Study of the Attitudes and Treatment Practices of Licensed Professional Counselors When Addressing Bulimia

This study examines the beliefs of licensed professional counselors in regard to the most effective diagnostic and treatment practices for clients with bulimia nervosa. One hundred licensed professional counselors practicing in the southwest region of Missouri were surveyed. Thirty-five percent returned the survey; however, only twenty-four percent completed the survey. It was found that a combination of self-reports, parent reports, food diaries, physician reports, and school reports is most frequently utilized to facilitate in making a diagnosis. The treatment of choice included a combination of individual, group, and family therapies.
