The Phytosociology of the Bryophytes At La Petite Gemme Prairie, Polk County, Missouri

A study of the phytosociology of bryophytes at La Petite Gemme Prairie, Polk County, Missouri was made between June 1980 and May 1981. A total of nine species was collected from five sample areas. Sample area one had the highest percent available light and lowest percent soil water holding capacity due to a prior burn. Sample area three had the lowest percent available light and the highest percent soil water holding capacity. Soil pH showed little variation throughout the five sample areas. Statistical comparisons and index of similarity values suggest that two bryophytic communities exist, one dominated by Campylium hispidulum and the other dominaned by Bryoandersonia illecebra.
