Orally Induced Tolerance to Streptococcus Mutans and Glucosyltransferase in Neonatal Mice

Three antigens, glucosyltransferase (GTase), formalin killed Streptococcus mutans cells (vaccine) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), were used to orally induce tolerance in neonatal C57BL mice. Radial immunodiffusion was used to measure the antibody response to vaccine and BSA, and an enzyme inhibition assay was employed to measure GTase antibody titer. Daily feeding during the first eight days of life resulted in a lower antibody response to the antigens upon subsequent challenge.
