Allelopathic Effects of Festuca Arundinaceae on the Growth of Juglans Nigra Seedlings

dc:description.abstractExperiments in which potted black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) seedlings were watered with leachate from dead fescue (Festuca arundinaceae Schreb.) tops resulted in reduced walnut root dry weight, with no effect on top growth. Leachate from live fescue, fescue roots, and green fescue leaves did not affect walnut growth. Fescue tops incorporated into the soil in which walnut seedlings were planted reduced top weight, root dry weight, and root to top ratio. Fescue tops reduced pH, increased phosphorus, and did not affect nitrogen in soil water. Fescue did not affect seedlings survival in any experiment. Results suggest that water soluble compounds are present in fescue tops, are released through decomposition, and reduce walnut root growth.
