Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis descriptive study addresses a void in systematic, multi-institutional research about employments for and assessments of the English major by graduates from 2 southwest Missouri state institutions for higher education. Representing a 22-year time span, respondents answered written survey questions concerning current employment, educational background, and personal profile. The research found substantial agreement among respondents that the English major is a highly gratifying personal experience but one that is neither easily employable nor highly profitable outside academe without careful planning early in a program of study. Besides internships and diversification of course work, the results also recommend departmental and institutional programs for assisting majors toward toward career possibilities outside academe.
