The Relationship of the Self-Concept and Achievement in Sixth Grade Students

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between self-concept and past achievements, in the language arts area, for sixth grade students in a small rural middle school in southern Missouri. The entire population of 50 students was utilized. The Piers--Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale: The way I Feel About Myself was given and scores were compared to previous language arts achievement scores earned on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. Results were not significant at the .05 level, but were instead, extremely scattered for both boys and girls, and for the group as a whole. Though self-concept was not found to be a reliable indicator of achievement for this group, it remains an important variable of the human personality.
