A Study to Determine Teachers' Attitudes Toward Retention

This study was conducted to determine teachers' attitudes toward retention. Based on research findings a comprehensive review of retention, including transition rooms, was presented. A questionnaire was constructed and then distributed to primary (K-3) teachers in several counties in Southwest Missouri. The analysis of the data indicated that an extremely high percentage of teachers approve of retention and that higher percentage of boys are retained than girls. The data also indicated that retention is not as beneficial as delaying entrance to kindergarten or assigning a child to a transition room, if and when these alternatives are appropriate.
