Types of Poetry Written By the 1983 Young Authors

This investigation studied the types of poetry written by children in grades one through six who were selected for the 1983 Young Authors' Conference at Southwest Missouri State University. The sample of the study consisted of nineteen male and female authors who composed a total of three hundred fifty-eight poems. The types of poetry forms included: free verse, haiku, couplet, cinquain, triplet, quantrain, stanza with rhyme, limerick, and diamante. The conclusion drawn from the investigation were as follows: 1) The couplet form of poetry was most used; 2) Quantrain and haiku forms of poetry were the second and third most used; 3) The triplet and diamante forms of poetry were least used by the young authors.
