The National Organization For Women: Building Community in the Face of Diversity

This thesis is an ethnographic look at the communication patterns of the National Organization for Women. Specifically it seeks to point out the usage of identification and community building efforts used by the different facets of the organization. The ethnography is a retelling of the narratives gathered from an eleven month field experience with the organization by the researcher. The results of the analysis of the narratives show the use of identification among members of the organization to create enclaves within the organization which are unique. The results also show the usage of community building techniques to conjoin the many enclaves into one thriving feminist organization.
