The Relationship of Writing Preference and Personality Type

This study attempted to see if a relationship exists between writing preference and Myers-Briggs personality type (MBTI). Subjects (N = 142) came from undergraduate and graduate composition students, who had already taken the MBTI, a self-administering forced choice instrument, and were enrolled at either Southwest Missouri State University or the University of Arkansas. Data was analyzed using loglinear analysis. The results of this study support the research hypothesis: there is a relationship between student writing preferences and personality type with 52 of 60 items registering significant Z-values at the .05 level. Further research should compare the dynamic patterns of scale interaction of regular MBTI type to writing process/MBTI personality type theory.
