The Relationship Between Superintendents and Boards of Education: the Effect of Communicator Style

This study focuses on the impact that superintendents' communicator style has on school board members' satisfaction. Members of the National School Board Association were mailed questionnaires booklets which contained Norton's (1978) Communicator Style Measure and Downs and Hazen's (1977) Communication Satisfaction Index. Results showed significant relationships between all communicator styles but "animated" and the seven dimensions of communication satisfaction. A significant difference was also found between male and female board members in their satisfaction with horizontal communication on the school board. This quantitative examination of the relationship between superintendents and boards of education shows interesting and applicable results which may be utilized to improve the interactions between these two groups.
