A Study of the Identification, Development and Implementation of an Instrument For the Analysis of Children's Illustrations

The purpose of this study was to identify, develop, and implement an instrument for analysis of children's illustrations. Subsequently, the Picture Analysis for Children (PAC) was developed utilizing the variables selected for analysis by the investigator's review of the literature and from personal experiences. A random sample of 85 books was selected for analysis from the 244 prose manuscripts submitted to the 1983 Young Authors' Conference sponsored by Southwest Missouri State University and the Springfield Chapter of the International Reading Association. The data generated by the PAC were analyzed and the following conclusions were made: (1) Children's illustrations reflected a strong preference for accurate depiction of text details, lifelike use of color, and realistic drawings; (2) Children's illustrations reflected moderate preference for portrayal of people or actions; and (3) Children's preferred illustrative techniques and media were influenced by grade level. A transition was observed, beginning in the fourth grade, to a more complex form of illustration.
