The Little Giant in the South - the Education of Blacks at Oakwood University, Alabama

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This text provides a critical commentary on a script for an educational video that utilizes elements of documentary filmmaking entitled The Little Giant in the South - The Education of Blacks at Oakwood University, Alabama. Taken together, the educational video script and the critical commentary represent an original contribution to recording the history of Oakwood University. This is the first doctoral-level study on this subject matter that combines a media artifact and a scholarly reflection regarding the education of Blacks at Oakwood; more broadly, this paper contributes to studies on African American ingenuity within the context of racial discrimination in education. As a member of an ethnic minority group in the United States and a native of the Caribbean, I understand the value of education and consider myself a social justice advocate. My identity impacts this topic through the lens of which I perceive discrimination in education among African Americans and Oakwood as a significant contribution to this problem.
