The Home Economics impact on male students and their families, focusing on nutrition and social well-being

“The enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is one of the fundamental rights of every human being.” (World Health Organisation, 1946, as cited in WHO, 2009) Being inspired by this, the researcher investigated the impact of Home Economics on male State secondary school students in Malta and Gozo and that of their families, and focused on nutrition and social wellbeing. Quantitative data was obtained by means of questionnaires (N=153) in order to gain data about the impact of nutrition and social well-being on these students. Findings revealed that although there is still room for improvement with regards to healthy eating patterns, an overall positive impact was observed. The social well-being aspect seems to be having a more positive effect on students. Results revealed that boys took part in various family activities, while they also stated of having good communication skills within the family. High self-esteem, the ability to manage stress and not being affected by peer pressure were three of the factors highlighted in the findings, but other factors may also be involved in this regard. Qualitative data was obtained by telephone interviews to parents (N=12) in order to gain better understanding. Parents’ perceptions of the subject mainly focused on cooking and nutrition, while other positive results were indicated, such as eating habits which were improved. The social well-being attribute shed light upon what was found in questionnaires, as positive results were also shown.
