A Performance Guide of George Crumb’s Metamorphoses Book II, for Amplified Piano with Critical Perspectives on its Visual Inspirations
Abstract
dc:description.abstractThis paper examines George Crumb’s Metamorphoses, Book II through the relationshipsbetween musical interpretation, visual art, and representation of artists within the classical canon. Through score analysis, performance study, and interdisciplinary comparison, the paper explores how Crumb translates visual imagery into music. The study addresses the Eurocentric and predominantly male focus of the paintings chosen for Metamorphoses, arguing that alternative visual frameworks that are more inclusive of women and broader in representation, can expand possibilities for performers and scholars alike. Furthermore, the paper includes a previously unpublished letter by Crumb that offers insight into his artistic process and selection of artworks.
