THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CAREER SATISFACTION AND PERSONALITY TYPE AMONG EMPLOYED MALE, ENGINEERS

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between career satisfaction and personality types of employed, male engineers as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Work Values Inventory. The subjects for this investigation were 119 male engineers presently employed by a single engineering firm located in the Kansas City area. The volunteer subjects completed and returned the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, the Work Values Inventory, and a personal information questionnaire which provided demographic information pertinent to the subject's work-related experiences and educational background. The Pearson Correlation coefficient was used to determine if a correlation existed between the continuous scores of the two functions perception and judgement (S-N, T-F) of the MBTI and the three work values (Cr, IS, Ac) of the WVI. Only one of the judging and perceiving functions correlated with one of the three work values to produce a statistically significant relationship. The S-N function produced a statistically significant negative correlation with the work value, creativity. All other categories failed to reject the null hypothesis. Although the correlation between S-N and creativity was statistically significant the correlation was not large enough to be of practical or theoretical use. The small correlation did not indicate a meaningful relation-ship between the two variables.
