Abstract
dc:description.abstractSymphony No. 1, "Distractions" by Britt Andrew Burns Composition for Symphony No. 1, Distractions began in Fall 2005 when the composer was living in north England. The first of the three-movement work was completed that fall with the other two finished in the winter of 2006. The inspiration behind the piece comes from ones personal experience and reaction to the distractions of the modern world. Everywhere one goes there are endless distractions around, and the negative effects can be noticed with just a little observation. Excess television, obsessions with food, image, career, sports, drugs, money, being in a constant hurry, these are all just different flavors of the distractions that consume us. The three movements each reflect on a different stage of awareness dealing with this theme.
