Racial Differences in Student Engagement and Attainment: A Study of Topeka High School, 1939 - 1984

This paper examines the current literature on the achievement and attainment gaps between African American and white students in United States public schools. It specifically examines evidence of student engagement and the attainment gap in Topeka High School. An examination of relevant academic literature, an examination of yearbooks, interviews with alumni, and an evaluation of school demographic and graduation rate records were methods used to identify trends in student engagement and persistence to graduation at Topeka High School. The school followed national trends in graduation rates and the fluctuations of attainment and achievement gaps over the years of the study.
