Music teachers and technology: An investigation of personal innovativeness, computer anxiety, and technological proficiency

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

This study investigated the potential for music teachers to serve as opinion leaders in the implementation of technology in the elementary and secondary school setting. Three hundred randomly selected K-12 music teachers in Iowa were surveyed as to their perceptions of self-innovativeness, computer anxiety, and proficiency in various technological hardware and software. Three hundred randomly-selected K-12 principals were also surveyed as to their perceptions of their music teacher's innovativeness. Results indicated that music teachers perceived themselves to be somewhat more innovative than the norm with those teachers of general music perceiving themselves to be the most innovative. The principals however, did not perceive their music teachers to be innovative. The Computer Anxiety Index indicated that as a group music teachers have lower degrees of computer anxiety than the norm. Significant differences in computer anxiety were found between instrumentalists and vocalists. Instrumentalists also indicated higher levels of proficiency in the various technologies.
