The electronic community: A study in how users interact on the ISCA electronic bulletin board system

The present study will focus on one CMC (computer-mediated communication) system known as the ISCA bulletin board system. ISCA is a large electronic conversation system that allows thousands of users to communicate through computer messages. This study will involve an ethnographic observation of ISCA users, examining how they communicate with one another. CMC can lower people's inhibitions significantly. Users may become self-dislosing about themselves to strangers, they may feel more able to engage in anti-social behavior, and they may feel more free to engage in playful behavior. These changes are significant enough that bulletin boards systems appear to form their own cultures and subcultures. These changes need to be considered as the use of bulletin boards grows.
