A case study of the construction industry labor force and the effects on future building projects

The focus of this research is the changing construction industry labor force in the United States, and its effects on future building projects. A two-part case study, comparing a building project and its required labor force from the early 1990s, with a theoretical project and its labor force in the year 2000, was used as the basis for this research. Cost analyses, labor supply, and available resources (equipment, tools, etc.) were analyzed for each project. The first part of the case study assessed the skilled and unskilled labor force necessary to complete a 1991 building addition project with the work force available at that time. The final part of the case study, based on statistics and studies currently available that estimate the demographics of the work force 2000, compared the labor force of 2000 to that of 1991 in order to determine if the 1991 building could be erected with the predicted diminished 2000 skilled work force.
