Contributing Factors to the Attrition of Honors Eligible University Students: A Qualitative Research Study

<p>This qualitative research study looks at the contributing factors to the loss of 14 high ability students who were enrolled Fall semester 1998 at a Southeastern university and who did not return to the same campus Fall semester 1999. All participants had an SAT score of > 1150 and a high school GPA of > 3.5. Though all participants met the criteria for eligibility to at least one of two institutional honors programs, not all were in an honors program.</p> <p>A semi-structured telephone interview was used for data collection Conversations were taped, cataloged and coded. The results indicated that parents and significant others were important influences on decisions. Freshman year adjustment issues and environmental issues contributed to attrition. Faculty were an institutional strength.</p>
