Abstract
dc:descriptionWe performed genotypic analysis of 26 cases diagnosed mainly as lymphoid reactive processes – 22 cases – and 4 borderline cases, for the purpose of investigating the possible existence of clonal gene rearrangements. Such rearrangements have been detected in a number of clinically benign entities but so far they have not been reported in clear reactive processes. We report here that 5/22 reactive processes analysed with IG and TCR gene probes contain clonal gene rearrangements and do so 2/4 borderline cases. These findings bear implications concerning the mechanism of lymphomatogenesis as well as the diagnosis of disease. Furthermore, we analysed 30 cases of malignant lymphoproliferations-Hodgkin’s disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas - and no clonal rearrangements were detected in Hodgkin’s disease with high numbe of Reed-Sternberg cells and in subtypes of peripheral T-cell lymphomas. The biological significance of these data relies on a possible correlation between absence of gene rearrangements and the specific cell phenotypes.
