Abstract

dc:description

Studies have been done on LDH and especially on the isoenzymes on the prostatic tissue, on 85 patients who were hospitalised in the Department of Urology at the University of Ioannina. The study of LDH has been done by the method of electrophoresis. It has been studied the ratio LDH₅/LDH₁ and it was found that 69 patients were suffering from hyperplasia of the prostate, the ratio was <1. In the remaining 16 patients it was found that the ratio LDH₅/LDH₁ <1. Eleven (11) of those, or 12,9% of the tota number had cancer of the prostate after an hystologic examination, while the remaining five (5), or 5,8% of total had different diseases of the prostate but were negative of cancer. We noted that levels of total LDH activity and the activities of LDH II, III, and IV were not consistently altered to a significant degree in malignant compared and to bening prostate glands. The ratio LDH₅/LDH₁ is a “tumor marker” for a early diagnosis of the cancer of the prostate.
