Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE OBJECT OF THE PRESENT WORK HAS BEEN THE INVESTIGATION OF THE SULFATION MECHANISM AT LOW SO2 CONCENTRATION AND LOW TEMPERATURES AND THE TESTING OF NEW PROTECTIVE MATERIALS. WE HAVE MEASURED CONTINIOUSLY (QUARTZ, SPIRAL MICROBALANCE) THE SULFATION RATE ON POWDERED CACO3 P.A AT 475 C WITH VARIATION OF THE SO2 CONCENTRATION BETWEEN 15 VOL% AT CONSTANT CONCENTRATION OF O2 (31 .2 VOL%) BY PROPER CONTROLLING OF THE N2 CONCENTRATION. FURTHER WE HAVE ESTIMATED THE ACTIVATIONENERGIES BY VARYING THE TEMPERATURE BETWEEN 15-60% C IN A FIXED ENVIRONMENT OF50% SO2, 50% AIR, SATURATED WITH WATER VAPOUR AND BY MEASURING THE SULFATION RATE ON POWDERED CACO3 P.A CONTINIOUSLY (QUARTZ SPIRAL MICROBALANCE) AND ON MARBLE POWDER PELLETS DISCONTINOUSLY (REPEATED WEIGHINGS). FINALLY WE HAVE TESTED NEW PROTECTIVE SYSTEMS TO RETARD THE DIFFUSION OF CA2+ TO THE CORROSIVE MEDIUM. FOR THIS PURPOSE WE HAVE USED THE POLYMERS: CHLORINATED RUBBER, PERFLUOROPOLYETHER, ACRYLIC AND EPOXY RESIN, WITHOUT AND WITH PIGMENTS, SUCH AS AL2(SO4)3.18H20, CRYSTALVIOLET AND RHODAMIN-B.
