THE OPTIMAL SYNTHESIS OF HEAT EXCHANGES NETWORKS IS THE MOST EFFICIENT METHODOLOGY FOR ENERGY CONSERVATION AND RECONSTRUCTION FOR ENERGY SAVING, IN GENERAL, IN THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. THE SUBJECT IS MAINLY TACKLED BY MEANS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CERTAIN CRITERIA AND HEURISTICS BASED ON THERMODYNAMICAL PRINCIPLES. IN THIS ESSAY THE PROBLEM IS TACKLED BY MEANS OF METHODS UTILING MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING. ON THE FIRST PHASE THE PROBLEM OF DETERMINING THE SUITABLE AUXILIARY FLOWS OF MINIMUM COST IS SOLVED. THE OPTIMUM AUXILIARY FLOWS ARE CONSIDERED TO BE THE DESIGN TARGET OF THE SECOND PHASE. BY MEANS OF SUITABLE MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS THE PROBLEM IS FORMULATED IN A LINEAR PROGRAMMING PROBLEM WHICH IS EASILY SOLVED. ON THE SECOND PHASE THE DESIGN TAKES PLACE THAT IS TO SAY THE OPTIMUM FLOW NETWORK IS DETERMINED. THE MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION OF THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED BY MEANS OF THE "BRANCH AND BOUND" METHOD OF MILP (MIXED INTEGER LINEAR PROGRAMMING). TWO DIFFERENT THEORETICAL MODELS ARE CREATED TO BACK UP THE ABOVE MENTIONED METHODOLOGY (A) THE "TRANSPORTATION" MODEL AND (B) THE "TRANSHIPMENT" MODEL. USING THE ABOVE ALGORITHM ONE CAN CONVEY MATHEMATICAL THEORIES INTO COMPUTER PROGRAMS. A USER-FRIENDLY SOFTWARE PACKAGE WAS DEVELOPED IN IBM PC AND COMPATIBLES ENVIRONMENT.
