THE ACTIVITIES OF L-ARGININE DECARBOXYLASE (ADC), L-ORNITHINE DECARBOXYLASE (ODC AND ANTIZYME (AZ) IN GERMINATED BARLEY SEEDS ARE CONSIDERABLY AFFECTED BY THEPRESENCE OF PLANT HORMONES (GIBBERELIC ACID, CYTOKININS) IN THE GROWTH MEDIUM,ODC FROM CHROMATIN OF GERMINATED BARLEY SEEDS HAS BEEN PURIFIED TO HOMOGENEITY. THE MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF CHROMATIN-BOUND ODC IS 55,000 WITH ISOELECTRIC POINT 5.2 AND KM TO L-ORNITHINE 0.36 MM. CYTOSOLIC ODC HAS BEEN PURIFIED 4,000-FOLD AND ITS MOLECULAR WEIGHT IS ONE OF THE PROTEIN WITH MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF 55,000 OR 37,000. THE ISOELECTRIC POINT OF CYTOSOLIC ODC IS 5,5 AND KM TO L -ORNITHINE 1 MM. IN GERMINATED BARLEY SEEDS ODC FORMS A STABLE COMPLEX WITH ITS ANTIZYME. THIS COMPLEX CAN BE DISSOCIATED BY TREATMENT WITH 10% W/V AMMONIUM SULFATE. THEIN VITRO FORMATION OF ODC-AZ COMPLEX IS CONSIDERABLY AFFECTED BY THE PRESENCE OF DNA AND CATIONS IN THE INCUBATION MIXTURE CO2+ AND SPERMINE ARE THE MOST EFFECTIVE AND CAUSE COMPLETE RELIEF OF THE IN VITRO INHIBITION OF ODC BY ANTIZYME AT 0.5 MM CONCENTRATION.
