ΑΛΛΗΛΕΠΙΔΡΑΣΕΙΣ ΙΟΝΤΩΝ ΚΑΙ ΠΡΟΣΑΝΑΤΟΛΙΣΜΕΝΩΝ ΘΥΛΑΚΟΕΙΔΩΝ ΚΥΑΝΟΒΑΚΤΗΡΙΩΝ
Abstract
dc:descriptionTHE REGULATION OF PHOTOELECTRON TRANSPORT ACTIVITY BY INORGANIC IONS WAS STUDIED WITH PERMEABLE ANACYSTIS NIDULANS CELLS, CONTAINING SEALED AND PROPERLY ORIENTED THYLAKOIDS, CAPABLE OF COUPLED ELECTRON TRANSPORT TO POST-PHOTOSYSTEM I, ELECTRON ACCEPTORS. THE IONIC CONTROL OF PHOTOELECTRON TRANSPORT OPERATES VIA PROCESSES SUCH AS SCREENING AND NEUTRALIZATION OF THE STATIC NEGATIVE ELECTRIC CHARGE AT THE CYTOPLASMIC SURFACE OF THE THYLAKOIDS, AS WELL AS VIA CHAOTROPIC MODIFICATION OF SURFACE ELEMENTS, AT CONDITIONS PROVIDING FOR SUFFICIENT LOCAL ACCUMULATION OF CHAOTROPIC ANIONS. IN ADDITION, OUR RESULTS INDICATE THAT PHOTSYSTEM II ACTIVITY IS CONTROLLED BY LONG RANGE ELECTROSTATIC EFFECTS, GENERATED BYMEDIUM IONS INTERACTING EXCLUSIVELY WITH THE CYTOPLASMIC SURFACE OF THE SEALEDTHYLAKOIDS, WHILE THE PHOTOSYSTEM II REACTION CENTERS ARE SITUATED ON THE ECTOPLASMIC THYLAKOID SURFACE.
